CN Mahlangu Campus
The campus is located in Siyabuswa, a town in the countryside of the Mpumalanga Province situated under Dr JS Moroka Municipality. Siyabuswa lies approximately 10 kilometers from Marble Hall and was founded in 1970. The R573 regional route that links Pretoria and the N11 national road, passes through the town.
Siyabuswa is a cultural heartland for the Ndebele people and boasts an abundance of fantastic arts and craft stores as well as traditional villages. It is also home to and situated within minutes from numerous nature reserves.
The town has an abundance of shops and shopping centres, including the upcoming 15,317m2 Siyabuswa Mall which is opening in November of 2022.
Middelburg Campus
Middelburg is a modern town situated in the Cultural Heartland of the Mpumalanga Province. The town serves as the agricultural, industrial and communications centre for the surrounding area and is well known as the Stainless Steel Capital of Africa as it is home to a large stainless steel plant named Columbus Stainless.
Middelburg is situated just minutes away from the Loskop Dam, and home to the Middelburg Nature Reserve, Kruger Dam as well as the Middelburg Dam. The Middelburg Nature Reserve provides shelter to numerous fascinating game species, while the abundance of marked trails offer a better glimpse of the beauty of the highveld, including large colonies of gorgeous cycads. The dams in the area allow for an abundance of exciting watersports such as sailing and fishing to be enjoyed.
Middelburg offers an abundance of exciting activities as well as unique cultural experiences, game reserves, plenty of shopping centres and much more.
Interestingly, hundreds of people travel to this area every year to enjoy the Middelburg Jazz Festival held in March. This event is spectacular to experience and a perfect excuse for a getaway. Middelburg has plenty to offer all history lovers as it is home to a few museums and fascinating monuments.
Mpondozankomo Campus
Mpondozankomo is a region situated within Witbank, under the Emalahleni Municipality. The Emalahleni Municipal area, which means the “place of coal”, consists inter alia of the towns of eMalahleni, Kwa-Guqa, Ga-Nala and Ogies. The town of eMalahleni was established in 1903. It was named after a ridge of white rock located near the present railway station.
In the early years, this ridge was a halting place for transport wagons and a trading post. eMalahleni has a large collection of heritage assets, which is currently under threat from rapid development. Emalahleni is probably the most industrialised municipal area in Nkangala and its landscape features mainly underground and opencast coalmines. This area has the largest concentration of power stations in the country.
Its mining and industrial history is reflected in the area’s heritage places. This includes elements of industrial history, military history, architectural/engineering and graves which should be protected and conserved.
Witbank Campus
Witbank is situated in the Cultural Heartland of Mpumalanga. The name Witbank is Afrikaans for ‘White Ridge’ and named after a rocky outcrop of white sandstone where wagon transport drivers rested many years ago. Early travellers discovered coal in this area. Of course, once the coal was discovered, numerous farmers arrived with their wagons to cart away the coal. Once Paul Kruger’s railway line reached this area in 1894, it solved all transport problems and the first coal mines started to operate.
Witbank soon developed into a town in 1903 and today it has developed into a rather large and bustling town where dairy, potatoes, maize, sheep and sweet potatoes are farmed. Interestingly, Winston Churchill hid in a colliery near Witbank during the Second Boer War after his escape from Pretoria.
Witbank boasts plenty of recreation to suit all preferences. The area is bustling with fantastic coffee shops, inviting farm stalls and fascinating cultural villages selling arts and crafts. Witbank is home to the well known Witbank Dam. This dam is known as the largest municipal dam in the southern hemisphere and boasts a catchment area of more than 3 540 square kilometres!
Of course, this magnificent dam is ideal for numerous exciting water sports such as skiing, windsurfing and fishing. Relax and watch the vibrant bird life in the area or enjoy a hike on one of the many beautiful hiking trails. As you sip on refreshing drinks and sail down the waters one can also enjoy some game viewing.
Witbank also offers opportunities to go parasailing, golfing, scenic hiking and adrenaline pumping 4×4 trails. Witbank is also near to the popular Kruger National Park where excellent game viewing of the Big 5 can be enjoyed.
The area offers numerous modern shopping centres and places of interest.
Waterval Boven Campus
Waterval Boven (officially known as Emgwenya) is a small town situated on the edge of the Escarpment on the banks of the Elands River above the 75m Elands Falls on the railway line from Pretoria to Maputo in Mpumalanga. Hence the name, which is Dutch for "above the waterfall".
It is the sister town of Waterval Onder which is at the base of the Escarpment below the waterfall. Both settlements were established in 1895 because of the building of the Pretoria - Delagoa Bay railway line, built by the Netherlands-South African Railway Company (NZASM).
The area is a major rock-climbing attraction, with some 650 sport climbing and 150 traditional routes. A lodge with mountain chalets provides accommodation for climbers and visitors, and a comprehensive guide exists to climbs in the area.
Extended Learning Unit (ELU)
